Be smart about being “green”
Green.
For years everyone has been talking about being green, reducing costs and saving the environment. I think it is a great idea. Anytime I can save money and protect the environment for future generations is fine by me. What happens though when people start taking it too far?
I recently read an article in PCWorld about reusing printer paper. The author suggests that you can reuse paper to save money and the environment. He suggests that you should use the drafts, misprints, and duplicate documents that were going to be recycled anyway. While this sounds like a good idea, it also sounds like a potentially really bad idea that a blogger captured perfectly.
While visiting a company the writer asked to print a document from his flash drive. Once he obtained his print job he flipped the sheet over and saw some interesting information pertaining to the company he was visiting. One page was a draft of an upcoming press release over a division that was being closed down. Another page contained an internal memo that informed employees they could not have December 31st off as a holiday even though January 1st fell on a Saturday. What if the blogger had no scrupulous? He could have contacted the nearest newspaper and read them the details of that press release. It would have been in the news before the company had notified the employees.
Being environmentally friendly is important, but not when it sacrifices privacy and security. If you are going to reuse paper, make sure it isn’t something confidential or embarrassing first.
