Interview with Arron Fu, Vice President, Software Development at UniPrint

Today UniPrint announced the release of Infinity, a printer-vendor independent managed print solution for any computing environment. UniPrint Infinity is a truly universal driver, not limited to any device such as Printer Computer Language-based or PostScript-based printers. It simplifies printer management and enables anywhere, anytime, any device secure pull printing across different platforms, offices and geographies.

Where did the idea come from?

UniPrint Infinity initially came about as a result of a customer demand for secure “pull-printing” – this demand mainly came from our customers in the government space.
Once we looked at the technology and surveyed the market landscape, we decided that managed print solution is the next logical step for UniPrint. We saw it as a fragmented marketplace with no one dominant player.
We also knew that our PDF based printer driver could create far more features for UniPrint Infinity.

What challenges did you encounter during development?

The obvious challenge was creating a platform that we could develop an entire ecosystem for growth. The other main difficulty was acquiring SDK’s from printer vendors. Security was also a major issue with lots of nuances which were important to address to in order to make Infinity as secure was required.

What was the initial response in beta testing?

We had targeted 6 of our customers as beta test sites. The results so far are very good and feedback on the product has been extremely positive, specifically regarding the ease of implementing the two-factor authentication process for pull-printing.  Specific feature feedback has encouraged us to move up the release of a couple of Infinity features to Q2.

What verticals will be most interested in UniPrint Infinity?

There are 3 verticals that would be most interested in our solution. Government, Financial and Health care. Most of these organizations tend to be large enterprises and prefer multi-vendor products which is really our “sweet-spot”. We have found that these are the sectors where security particularly is at a premium.
