The Greatest Weakness is Collective Experience

More from Peter Sheahan’s keynote at the Global MPS Conference! If you have never had the pleasure of hearing Peter speak, he really is a great speaker and had so many great points during the event.

His main goal is to help companies capitalize on solutions or overcome problems to help drive their business. One quote he gave during the presentation really stood out to me, and applies to the printing and imaging industry as a whole.

He said “The greatest weakness is collective experience.” His point being that sometimes we find a way to solve a problem, then we find a way to replicate it, and then we never move on.

When we understand something as a group and understand how something works it is hard to break outside of that shell and try something new. This is a big reason why people have trouble switching to MPS. If you have been selling boxes for 20 years and that has worked for you, why should you believe that it won’t? Why should you believe that MPS will?

In many instances, we get into comfort zones and have trouble moving out of them. How many times have you gone to a restaurant and ordered the same food because you know you will like it? As a dealer you know how to sell a box, and you have no idea how to sell a service. If everyone around you feels the same way it is hard to change, it is hard to FL!P as Sheahan puts it.

I don’t think anyone in the industry wants to end up like Kodak. A company that Sheahan explained has a strategic plan in place to make money this year through litigation. They missed the boat on the digital camera because they had created one, but not at the right time. They didn’t continue with the digital camera and now they are behind the curve with little hope on catching up.

The market is maturing and heading into something new, the question is will you be in front of the curve or behind?
